Dear Friends:

I hope your 2010 is off to a great start! I have lots of helpful info for you in this newsletter - articles to help you improve communication in your family, new data on teens and technology and more.

And I have great news that just came in today: I received word that I just won a Mom's Choice Award for my 3 hour audio book You're Empowered! Parenting Teens With Conviction, Communication and Love. If you want easy-to- absorb strategies to enhance your relationship with your teen, parents rave about this accessible and helpful program. I have yet to learn what this award really means, but if you haven't yet treated yourself to the CDs or MP3 download, you should consider it.

My best,

Are you Worried About Your Teen's Media Consumption?

Every parent I hear from seems worried about the amount of time their teenager spends using technology. And you probably heard about the research released last week that says kids 8 - 18 are spending over 7 1/2 hours daily plugged in to entertainment media. That's a lot. But, before we go off the deep end, we really do need to consider all sides of this situation, including how much time we spend plugged in ourselves. Take notice of that... you may be surprised yourself.

I've posted a video from the Kaiser Family Foundation, the folks who conduct the research, that highlights kids' point of view. What do you think about this topic? Read the post and please leave your comments.

Family Communication:
Talk About Talking
"What is working in your family, and where is there room for improvement?" This is a great question to pose to your whole family as you open a discussion on what tweaks and changes you need to implement. One busy mom told me that in her family everyone interrupts and seems to feel that to be heard they need to speak louder. Another told me her kids want more time to talk with her. You won't know what is working - from your teen's point of view - until you ask. So go ahead... talk about talking. Read article

Reflections on the Long
and Winding Road of
Raising a Son

Some of you who have followed my blog and may have seen that we had a joyous experience last month when our son graduated from college. I'm still smiling from the inside out... even in my sleep, I think.  I had forgotten about many of the challenges we faced in high school until I cleaned out some file cabinets during the holidays.
