I'm not a digital native by age, but am definitely one in spirit. I eschew phone calls for texting, IM and the occasional email.

People need to realize that for these kids, texting isn't considered rude. In the next 20 - 30 years, texting will likely supplant talking as the communication method of choice.

It's possible to get your middle school child a cell phone and have the texting feature turned off(free of charge by the way). My girlfriend complained about sixth graders getting in her car and not talking to her, but texting instead. Don't be pressured into getting your child texting because all their friends have it. It is so hard to deal with it when it gets out of control and content will become an issue sooner than you could imagine. Your child will be better off not having it, although they won't see that.

My son is almost, but not quite old enough for this to be a problem. I am pretty worried about how I will handle the cell phone situation once he has one. I don't like to intrude on his privacy, but I want to make sure that he isn't doing anything too inappropriate. I know kids are getting cells at younger and younger ages, but how young is too young. It's certainly convenient for him to have a way of reaching me, but he's only in middle school! I don't want him getting addicted to texting at this young age!

In today's world of technology things are changing fast. I would also like to let parents know that although texting is accomplished on the computer and the phone as well as IM'ing on both there is another device they need to know about. We think those handheld video games are cool and even small children are mastering them. They provide hours of quiet on long rides, too. They can be used for texting and IMing. I am sure that there will be more of this coming in our wireless world. It is important that we, as parents, have some general knowledge about the technology that is out there. I can't tell you how many times I have excitedly told me high schoolers and college kids what I learned and how easily they took me 10 steps further. Technology is not going away and we, too, need to keep learning even if it means learning from our children.

"The power of small"...I love that, Lisa. What you are saying is so important to remember - that the little actions each one of us take every day is what matters the most. Thank you!

We had a sexting incident in our town - not a huge deal, but it blew up into a national incident. I think it's more than possible to keep kids' use of technology under control. The key, IMHO, is to provide examples to help them to see that just sending "a little message" can turn into a huge problem on the internet - while turning off the phone can actually save another kid's reputation. It's really about the "power of small" - you don't have to do something huge to make a big difference, for better or for worse.
